Ever designed a flyer, sent it to print, and thought:
“Wait… why does this look different than it did on my screen?”
You’re not alone—and you’re not crazy. It’s a common experience in printing, and it comes down to how screens and paper handle color very differently.
1. Screens Use Light. Print Uses Ink.
Your phone, tablet, and computer use light (RGB: Red, Green, Blue) to display color. It’s vibrant, backlit, and often very bright—especially on glossy, high-contrast displays.
Printing, on the other hand, uses ink (CMYK: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black) on paper. Ink absorbs light rather than emitting it. That means:
-
Colors often appear duller or darker in print
-
Bright blues, neons, and hot reds don’t always convert well
-
White paper and lighting conditions can also affect perception
2. Each Screen Shows Color Differently
No two screens are calibrated the same way. A red on your phone might look slightly orange on your laptop or purple-ish on your coworker’s monitor.
Unless you’re using a calibrated professional monitor, what you see isn’t always what your file actually contains.
3. RGB vs. CMYK Files
If you design in RGB, colors can look vibrant and saturated. But most printers require CMYK—a different color space.
When your file gets converted for print, some RGB colors don’t have a perfect CMYK match, which can cause a shift in appearance.
4. Paper Type Changes Everything
Colors print differently on:
-
Uncoated paper (like letterhead or stationery)
-
Glossy paper (like postcards or brochures)
-
Textured papers (like watercolor or cotton stock)
Some absorb more ink, some reflect light differently. The same ink on two papers can look like two different colors.
How to Get the Best Results
-
Design in CMYK (or ask us to convert and review for you)
-
Avoid relying on bright neon or fluorescent colors
-
Ask for a printed proof if color is critical
-
Request our calibrated printer profiles for matte and gloss paper stocks, so you can soft-proof your designs with more accuracy
-
Talk to us early in the process—we can suggest papers, profiles, or tweaks to improve the outcome
